What is the difference between HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces

Typically, HDMI is widely used in TVs, game consoles, and laptops, while DisplayPort is generally more common in PCs and monitors. What is the difference between HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces?
DisplayPort interfaces
  1. Video and audio transmission capabilities
Both HDMI and DisplayPort support high-definition video and multi-channel audio transmission. However, the latest HDMI 2.1 standard supports video resolutions up to 10K, while the DisplayPort 2.0 standard supports resolutions up to 16K. In terms of audio transmission, both support the latest audio formats, but HDMI is more likely to be compatible with home theater systems.
  2. Resolution and refresh rate
Resolution and refresh rate are key to display performance. HDMI 2.1 supports a higher maximum resolution and refresh rate than HDMI 2.0, but DisplayPort 2.0's performance parameters are higher on paper and it can support higher resolutions and faster refresh rate.
  3. Adapt to different scenarios
HDMI interface is more common in home entertainment systems, such as connecting TV boxes, game consoles and other devices, while DisplayPort is more commonly used in professional monitors and high-performance graphics workstations.
  4. Connector type
HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces are different in physical shape. HDMI interfaces are relatively common and are backward compatible with many types of older interfaces. DisplayPort comes in standard and Mini sizes, with the latter often used in portable devices.
  5. Compatibility
The HDMI interface is more popular, and almost all modern TVs and many monitors are equipped with HDMI ports. DisplayPort mainly exists on personal computers and high-end monitors.
  6. Multi-screen display support
DisplayPort's multi-screen technology (such as MST) allows multiple displays to be chained through a single DisplayPort connection. When it comes to HDMI, although some solutions provide similar functionality, they are usually not as direct and efficient as DisplayPort support.
  7. Future development trends
In future development, both interfaces will continue to evolve. However, DisplayPort seems to be more focused on high resolution and refresh rate support, while HDMI is striving to become the most versatile multimedia interface.
