DisplayPort: The Performance Leader and Evolution Path in the Digital Interface Field
DisplayPort, designed to outperform any other digital connector, has been on a mission to revolutionize display standards since its inception. Initially intended to replace outdated DVI and VGA connection standards, it has successfully propelled display quality and consumer electronics device standards to new heights. Over the years, it has been highly favored by heavy users and gamers, with its performance taking the lead for a long time until the recent emergence of HDMI 2.1 as a competitive contender.

Analysis of Features of Different DisplayPort Versions
DisplayPort 1.2
Developed in 2009, DisplayPort 1.2 supports a 4K monitor resolution with a refresh rate of 60Hz. It has an effective bandwidth of 17.28 Gbps and utilizes 4 data channels. It introduces the second-generation HBR2 as well as the Multi-Stream Transport (MST) system (for more information on MST, click on the relevant link). Thunderbolt, Mini DisplayPort, and USB-C interfaces are all compatible with DisplayPort. Adaptive and passive adapters are also compatible with DP 1.2, and there are significant improvements in audio-video synchronization.
DisplayPort 1.4
Released in 2016, DisplayPort 1.4 represents a series of major upgrades over the somewhat disappointing DP 1.3 version. It supports both 4K and 8K monitors simultaneously, with resolution refresh rate capabilities reaching 120Hz or 60Hz depending on the selected resolution. The bandwidth is expanded to four data channels, with a maximum of 25.92 Gbps. It includes HBR3 (Bit Rate Level 3). Notably, DisplayPort 1.4 employs Display Stream Compression (DSC) technology, enabling the display of a 4K resolution at a frequency of 240Hz.
DisplayPort 2.0
Introduced in 2019, DisplayPort 2.0 adds a considerable number of powerful features to this new standard. It supports an 8K @ 60Hz monitor resolution. Additionally, it supports 10K @ 60Hz and 16K @ 60Hz monitor resolutions to meet the demands of true cutting-edge technology enthusiasts. The effective bandwidth reaches up to 77.4 Gbps and supports the latest Ultra-High Bit Rate (UHBR). Adaptive Sync is an optional feature provided by DisplayPort 2.0. Moreover, DisplayPort Alt-Mode will integrate DP 2.0 standard data channels within the USB-C connector. USB-C DP Alt-Mode can support three 4K monitors at 144Hz using DSC. As device sizes and compatibility shift towards USB-C, DP Alt-Mode will become more prevalent in future products.

Significant Advantages of DisplayPort
1、Royalty-Free: This feature effectively reduces costs for OEMs, ODMs, and end customers, giving DisplayPort a price advantage in the market competition.
2、MST Support: Multi-stream support makes desktop expansion easier than ever before. In contrast, SST is confusing and has limited functionality.
3、8K Resolution: As display technology evolves, 8K is becoming the new 4K. DisplayPort's support for 8K resolution brings users a higher-definition and smoother visual experience.
4、DP Adapter: As a common standard, DisplayPort can work in conjunction with other standards such as HDMI, facilitating connections between different devices for users.
5、Type-C Alt Mode Connection: The future belongs to USB-C, and DisplayPort makes it even more powerful. USB-C DP Alt-Mode is a cost-effective alternative to Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 solutions and, depending on actual user needs, offers powerful functionality.
