ASMedia showcases ASM4242 USB4 chip complete solution
ASMedia and USB-IF jointly exhibited their own IC-designed USB4 chip solutions at COMPUTEX, including the ASM4242 chip used on the host side, as well as the ASM2464PD for USB4 bridging NVMe devices and the ASM2464PDX for bridging PCIe devices, allowing USB4 hosts and peripherals to have more possibilities.
ASMedia also mentioned that more motherboard manufacturers will use USB4 chips in the future, or expand USB4 in the form of AIC interface cards. The scenario displayed at the booth is to use the ASM4242 interface card to expand USB4 Type C and connect to the device side of ASM2464PD or ASM2464PDX.
The data transfer test can quickly reveal the transmission performance of USB4. The USB4 SSD using the ASM2464PD chip can achieve a high performance of 3683 MB/s and 3715 MB/s sequential read and write by connecting to the ASM4242 USB4 host. When paired with the ASM3074C HUB, it can also answer the extreme speed of various external devices.
In addition, ASMedia also unveiled the USB4 80Gbps, 120 Gbps physical layer, and PCIe Gen5 physical layer under development for the first time. It also announced that the FPGA platform of the USB4 Dock will be exhibited at CES 2025. This USB4 Dock supports multi-function workstations, provides a maximum transmission speed of 40Gbps and a maximum power supply capacity of 240W, and is expected to be sampled in 2025.
The USB4 Dock will support the integration of multiple interfaces, including USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, and Ethernet ports. Users only need one USB Type-C or Thunderbolt 4 cable to connect all devices, supporting up to 8K resolution (UHBR 20), providing richer and more diverse external applications. In addition, the USB4 Dock also provides charging function, providing a convenient charging solution for a variety of devices.
