PCI devices have DMA capabilities, allowing them to directly access and modify system memory. As connectivity continues to evolve, especially with the popularity of hot-swappable PCIe devices such as Thunderbolt™, we face a serious problem: once an infected or compromised device is connected, the entire computer system may suffer irreversible damage.
Traditional PCI devices are usually built-in, connected directly to the computer motherboard through a card or soldering. However, while the convenience of new hot-swappable PCIe devices also increases the risk of system being vulnerable to driven DMA attacks. An attacker can gain full control of the PC by installing malware on a PCIe DMA-enabled port without the user being aware of it.
Thunderbolt™ 4 docking solutions
To address this challenge, Thunderbolt™ 4 introduces new security measures. It requires each manufacturer to implement the latest DMA protection on their VT-d and PCIe devices. For the best protection, both your Thunderbolt™ 4 docking station and your laptop should support and enable VT-d DMA protection. This onboard VT-d DMA protection combined with the docking station's features can effectively block driven DMA attacks.
In addition to enhanced security, Thunderbolt™ 4 also brings performance improvements. Intel has increased the PCIe connection speed from 16Mbps to 32Mbps, allowing users to access onboard physical resources faster. At the same time, data transfer speeds remain at 40Gbps, but you can now directly connect up to three Thunderbolt™ 4 devices through a compatible docking station (no daisy chain connection required). In addition, Thunderbolt™ 4 also supports dual 4K video and single 8K video output, and has become part of the USB4 specification, further promoting the development of universal connection compatibility.
For users who have upgraded to a PC or tablet that supports Thunderbolt™ 4, a compatible docking station is essential. The DS018R Thunderbolt™ 4 Dual 4K Docking Station launched by Purplelec is an ideal choice. It has a 90W power output, providing powerful connectivity while ensuring that all devices are adequately charged. With three additional Thunderbolt™ 4 ports, you can easily connect all your devices to create an efficient workstation. In addition, built-in VT-d DMA protection ensures that your workstation is safe and secure.
