MST: The Solution for Multi-External-Display Users

With the continuous emergence of new devices with fewer ports, MST (Multi-Stream Transport) has become a beacon of hope for users who want to use multiple external displays. Introduced in 2009 with DisplayPort v1.2, MST enables users to view multiple applications simultaneously, significantly enhancing productivity and multitasking capabilities. With MST, users can view multiple Excel sheets, browser windows, and emails on different external displays.
   How MST Works
MST can be implemented in two ways: through an MST hub or by daisy-chaining displays.
   MST Hub Configuration
An MST hub connects to a single DisplayPort v1.2 port on the source device. The hub has one input and up to four outputs, distributing the video signal to external displays. Each display operates independently, allowing for various configurations using graphics card software like AMD Eyefinity and Nvidia Surround. However, it's essential to verify that your graphics card supports DisplayPort v1.2 and to check the number of displays it can support. Note that macOS does not support MST functionality.

   MST Daisy-Chaining
MST daisy-chaining requires displays with built-in MST functionality, featuring both DisplayPort input and output ports. This method involves connecting multiple devices in series using a single DisplayPort 1.2 cable, reducing cable clutter. The source device recognizes each display as if it were connected via a separate port.
   MST Hub Modes
   Video Wall Mode
Video wall mode combines all external displays into a single large screen, ideal for digital signage, advertisements, and public spaces like airports, hospitals, and financial institutions. This mode attracts attention with its visually striking display.

   Extended Mode
Extended mode allows users to view their computer desktop on all connected displays, with each display showing different applications. This mode is perfect for multitasking, enabling users to work on multiple projects simultaneously and significantly improving efficiency.

   Mirror Mode
Mirror mode displays the same image on all external displays, useful for presentations, in-store advertising, airport information screens, and trade shows.
