IT maintenance dilemmas with IP and LCD console KVM failures
Today, server rooms and data centers rely on advanced IP and LCD console KVM to maintain efficient operation. However, when a failed server is not connected to the KVM, the connection interruption will cause a series of problems, and IT maintenance engineers will face many difficulties, as follows:
Remote maintenance is limited
VNC cannot solve problems at the hardware or operating system level: VNC is usually not allowed to be installed on the server due to potential security risks, which requires maintenance engineers to go to the fault site in person. Sometimes, engineers need to visit multiple sites in a day, which takes a lot of energy.
The problem of using bulky emergency vehicles
Bulk emergency vehicles: If the remote server site LCD console has limited space or lacks network access, bulky emergency rescue vehicles are often the only option. But what's more difficult is that the failed server may be located in a narrow passage, making it difficult or even impossible for the emergency rescue vehicle to reach.
Equipment transportation problems
Delivering equipment to an external or remote maintenance location: If there is no repair vehicle available, engineers can only drag heavy maintenance equipment to various construction sites or arrange express delivery. These preliminary preparations often take two hours or even longer. Moreover, sometimes engineers arrive at the site and find that they did not bring the required equipment, resulting in a lot of time and manpower wasted.
Maintenance record problems
Limitations of maintenance records: Sometimes it is necessary to take video snapshots and record operations for further troubleshooting, record modification settings, or for training. If the maintenance is done by a subcontractor, the server maintenance situation needs to be monitored throughout the process. However, the use of cameras or mobile phones is usually prohibited in secure server rooms, and keyboard/mouse operations and detailed server configurations cannot be recorded by CCTV.
