HDMI interface VS DP interface: advantages and disadvantages
HDMI and DP interfaces are the two most common high-definition digital display interfaces. They can both transmit audio and video signals at the same time, but there are also some obvious differences and characteristics between them. In addition to the different interface shapes and wires, there are also different parameters such as bandwidth.
Introduction to HDMI interface:
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) interface is an interface designed for digital high-definition audio and video technology. It was first launched in 2002 and has been upgraded many times. The latest version is HDMI 2.1. HDMI interface is widely used in multimedia entertainment devices such as TVs, set-top boxes, game consoles, Blu-ray players, etc., and can also connect computers and monitors. There are different types of HDMI interfaces, including Type A (standard), Type B (dual channel), Type C (mini), Type D (micro) and Type E (automotive), of which Type A is the most common.
The advantages of HDMI interface are:
01. It can transmit high-definition video and multi-channel audio signals at the same time, simplifying the installation difficulty of system lines
02. It can support advanced display technologies such as 3D, HDR, VRR, eARC, etc., improving the picture quality and sound experience
03. It can support CEC function, so that compatible devices can be interconnected and controlled
04. It can support Ethernet function and share Internet connection through HDMI
05. It is backward compatible with DVI interface and can connect some older devices through adapter
The disadvantages of HDMI interface are:
01. The transmission distance is limited, generally not more than 15 meters, otherwise there will be signal attenuation or interference
02. It requires the support of copyright protection technology (HDCP), otherwise it may not be able to play some copyrighted content
03. It does not support two-way transmission and can only send signals from the source device to the target device
DP interface introduction
DP (DisplayPort) interface is a high-performance digital display interface standard. It was first launched in 2006. After many upgrades, the latest version is DP 2.0. The DP interface is mainly used for the connection between computers and monitors, and can also connect other devices. There are different types of DP interfaces, including standard DP, mini DP and micro DP, among which standard DP is the most common.
The advantages of the DP interface are:
01. High transmission bandwidth, can support higher resolution and refresh rate
02. Support multi-screen extension mode (MST), can connect multiple monitors through one port
03. Support adaptive synchronization technology (G-SYNC or FreeSync), can prevent screen tearing or stuttering
04. Support two-way transmission, can send signals from source device to target device, can also send signals from target device to source device
The disadvantages of the DP interface are:
01. Does not support audio return function (ARC), can not return TV audio to the amplifier via DP and then output
02. Does not support Ethernet function, can not share Internet connection through DP
03. Not compatible with HDMI or DVI interface, requires converter or adapter to connect
