What are the drawbacks of the DisplayPort MST solution?

  The DisplayPort MST solution is a powerful technology for multi-monitor setups, providing a larger workspace, more efficient multitasking capabilities, and a richer visual experience. While DisplayPort MST (Multi-Stream Transport) solutions offer significant convenience and flexibility for multi-monitor configurations, they also come with some drawbacks.

  1. Bandwidth Limitations:
  In DisplayPort MST technology, the combined data requirements of all connected monitors must not exceed the bandwidth limitations of a single DisplayPort port from which the video source originates. This means that if multiple high-resolution monitors are connected, there may be issues with insufficient bandwidth, leading to a decline in image quality or even failure to function properly.
  This is particularly true for older DisplayPort versions (such as 1.2), whose bandwidth limitations may not meet the demands of multiple high-resolution displays. Although higher versions like DisplayPort 1.4 offer increased bandwidth, limitations still exist.
  2. Monitor Compatibility:
  Not all monitors support MST functionality. Older monitors or certain specific models may lack MST support, which restricts the widespread application of MST technology.
  Furthermore, even if a monitor supports MST, it must have both DisplayPort input and output ports to enable daisy chaining. This further limits the range of available monitors.
  3. Operating System and Hardware Requirements:
  Only certain versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system fully support MST functionality. This means that if users are on an unsupported operating system, they may not be able to take full advantage of MST technology.
  Additionally, MST functionality requires a compatible graphics card, MST-supported monitors, and the latest GPU drivers. These hardware and software requirements can increase the cost and time investment for users.

  4. Complexity of Configuration and Management:
  While MST technology simplifies the connection process for multi-monitor setups, there remains a degree of complexity in configuration and management. Users need to ensure that all connections are correct and may need to adjust monitor settings and resolutions to achieve optimal display quality.
  Moreover, if the monitor configuration changes (such as adding or removing monitors), users may need to reconfigure MST settings, which can add extra workload and time costs.
  5. Image Quality Variations:
  Since monitors share bandwidth, there may be differences in image quality among monitors connected to the same MST source. This variation can be more pronounced when multiple high-resolution monitors are connected.
  Such differences in image quality can impact users' visual experience and work efficiency.
  In summary, while the DisplayPort MST solution has many advantages, it also presents some drawbacks. Users need to weigh the pros and cons of using MST technology and make decisions based on their needs and budget.
