Can HDMI 1.4 transmit 4K video?
HDMI 1.4 can transmit 4K video, but there are certain limitations. The HDMI 1.4 version supports a maximum bandwidth of 10.2 Gbps, which enables it to transmit video content with 4K resolution (3840x2160). However, due to bandwidth limitations, the refresh rate of HDMI 1.4 can only reach 24Hz or 30Hz when transmitting 4K video, which means that when playing 4K videos with high frame rates or rich action scenes, there may be stuttering or the picture may not be smooth.
In addition, HDMI 1.4 also has limitations on its color depth and audio support when transmitting 4K video. HDMI 1.4 supports a maximum color depth of 8 bits, that is, each pixel has 8 bits for each red, green, and blue channel, which limits the color expression to a certain extent. At the same time, although HDMI 1.4 supports high-definition audio formats such as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, it may not be able to meet the needs of high-bandwidth audio at the same time when transmitting 4K video.
In contrast, HDMI 2.0 and higher versions have more obvious advantages in transmitting 4K video. HDMI 2.0 supports a maximum bandwidth of 18 Gbps, and can transmit videos with higher resolutions and refresh rates, including 4K resolution videos at a refresh rate of up to 60Hz, and supports higher color depth and HDR (high dynamic range) video transmission, thus providing a wider color range and better picture quality.
In summary, although HDMI 1.4 can transmit 4K video, it may not perform as well as HDMI 2.0 and higher versions due to factors such as bandwidth and color depth. Therefore, when choosing a device for transmitting 4K video, it is recommended to give priority to HDMI 2.0 or higher interfaces.
