As Thunderbolt™ technology has continued to evolve from the original standard to versions such as Thunderbolt™ 3 and 4, and compatibility with USB-C cables, the technology has reached an unprecedented peak in usability. Starting with Thunderbolt™ 3, a single cable can provide four times the data transfer speed and twice the video bandwidth of other cables, while also supplying up to 100W of power, all in one compact port. Thunderbolt™ 4 continues to build on this foundation, adding the ability to daisy-chain two 4K displays or a single 8K display.
While Thunderbolt™ and USB-C are physically compatible, there are some performance differences between the two that can sometimes be confusing. Thunderbolt™ 3 uses the USB-C connector as its standard interface, which simplifies the process of connecting different devices with the same cable. However, Thunderbolt™ ports far exceed USB-C ports in performance. Thunderbolt™ 4 ports are able to support both Thunderbolt™ and USB-C devices, while some Thunderbolt™ 3 devices do not fully support USB-C.

Any USB-C cable can be plugged into a Thunderbolt™ 3 or 4 port, and vice versa, but if the connected device does not use Thunderbolt™ technology, the data transfer speed will be limited to the performance of USB-C. USB-C devices can transfer data at rates ranging from 5 Gbps (USB 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 Gen 1) to 10 Gbps (USB 3.1 and 3.2 Gen 2) to 20 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2x2). In contrast, Thunderbolt™ 3 and 4 devices can transfer data at up to 40 Gbps, twice the maximum transfer rate of USB-C.
It helps to simplify understanding to think of Thunderbolt™ as a unique hardware interface standard (rather than just a USB cable). Thunderbolt™ does everything USB-C can do, but faster. To avoid confusion, when you need the full functionality of Thunderbolt™ technology, make sure to plug the USB-C connector into a port with the "lightning" icon (the official Thunderbolt™ symbol).
A Thunderbolt™ compatible dock turns your Thunderbolt™-enabled PC or laptop into a high-speed hub for transferring data, video, audio, storage, and power, all over a single cable to your computer. Peripherals such as HDMI® and DisplayPort monitors, controllers, network devices, headsets, and more can all be easily connected to the dock, either directly or using the appropriate USB-C adapter.
Purplelec has always been at the forefront of USB and Thunderbolt™ technology. We recognize that the future trend will be to rely on a single port to transfer all data between all peripherals. Therefore, we have been designing new docks that support the latest video and data transfer technologies. To help users find their ideal docking solution, all of these docks from Purplelec support dual 4K video at up to 60Hz, data transfer speeds up to 40Gbps, and provide Power Delivery (PD) capabilities to charge your laptop or MacBook.
For example, our DS018R Thunderbolt™ 4 Dual 4K Docking Station is equipped with a 90W PD and is compatible with Windows 10 or later laptops that support Thunderbolt™ 4, and is backward compatible with Thunderbolt™ 3, USB4®, and USB-C devices running Windows 10 or later or macOS 11 or later, no matter how many devices are connected. The dock features 13 ports, including four Thunderbolt™ ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB-A charging and peripheral ports.
